Dodoma – To address the growing challenges of mental health for young people and the general population, the Tanzanian government has increased the number of centres providing counseling and mental health services to 701.
The initiative aims to raise awareness and reduce stigma related to mental health issues across the country.
On April 16, 2025, she answered questions from Special Councillor Lucy John Sub at Deputy Medical Minister Godwin Morell’s Deputy Minister Dodoma, saying the service is being offered at the Regional Referral Hospital and Mirémbe Psychiatric Hospital. He explained that the service includes counseling and public awareness campaigns designed to help youth and other community groups deal with mental health challenges.
Dr. Morell added that the government has trained a total of 2,840 health professionals, including doctors and nurses, to recognize and address non-communicable diseases, including mental health disorders. These initiatives aim to expand reach and efficiency of mental health services to more citizens.
Additionally, the government has established a customer service centre that can be accessed through a free telephone number 115, allowing citizens to receive mental health advice over the phone. This step is intended to reduce stigma, improve service accessibility and enable early intervention.
In conclusion, Dr. Morell said the government has established 1,561 youth-friendly service centres in all regions through the National Accelerated Investment Agenda for Youth and Youth (NAIA). These centres provide mental health services in an environment tailored to the needs of young people. He emphasized that the government remains committed to investing in mental health services and ensures that all Tanzanians receive timely and appropriate support.
