The teenage driver arrested in a fatal road crash in Letterkenny, County Donegal County, was released on St. Patrick’s Day.
The man in his 60s, named locally Anthony Gallagher, died after he and his brother, who are also in their 60s, were attacked by a car on Lower Main Street on Monday around 3:00am.
The injured man was seriously injured in Galway, University Hospital.
Letterkenny’s St Patrick’s Day parade was cancelled due to a crash, with about 200 people attending an all-night stay in town for their two brothers on Monday.
In a statement Tuesday, An Garda Síochána (Ireland Police Service) said the file was ongoing investigation into crashes with the Director of the Prosecutor (DPP) and director of the Garda Youth Diversion Bureau.
Letterkenny and Milford mayor Jerry McNagle said the incident left a dark cloud in the community.
“People were experiencing a lot of all night, and people were visibly shocked,” he told BBC Radio Foil’s Northwest Today Program.
“There’s really a sense of distrust that this has happened. There was a silence that surprised me last night’s all-night supper and it’s very difficult to incorporate it.”
McNuggle said Anthony Gallagher is a much-loved lollipop guy at a local school.
“I’m sure he and all the teachers and friends around town will be badly gone when the kids return to school today.”
Organizers of St. Patrick’s Day Parade posted on social media that the event was cancelled as “deep regret.”
They said the decision was made after consultations with Gardai as the parade route was directly affected and “it is not possible to proceed as planned.”
