The streets of New York were filled with light blue shirts and plenty of hearts over the weekend as hundreds of runners and walkers gathered for the 9/11 Memorial & Museum 5K Run/Walking.
The event went down on Sunday. The goal is to raise about $600,000 to keep the museum free to the public. Social media and fitness star Ally Love was helping to launch the event.
NYPD officials closed down the streets in Lower Manhattan, barricades throughout the region, clarifying courses and keeping participants safe.
The race follows the route taken by many first responders on September 11, 2001, making the event deeply symbolic to many people involved.
Among the crowd was runners from all over the world. They were met with a powerful sight as participants crossed the finish line in front of the 9/11 museum…they were cried out words of encouragement, with lines of FDNY firefighters in red shirts, applause and waving.
