Virginia Beach, VA – A new tiktok trend called “Airport Theory” has impacted thrill-seeking travelers, skipping the recommended 2-hour arrival time at the airport.
Instead, some are about to arrive just 15-20 minutes before the flight, especially during the busy spring break season at Norfolk International Airport.
Norfolk International Airport spokesman Chris Jones warns that this approach could lead to missed flights.
Jones explained that most airports, including Norfolk, close gates 15 minutes before departure. This means that even after travelers pass security, the flight doors are still closed.
Parking is another concern, especially during peak travel times.
Last spring break, the airport reached 90% with almost full parking capacity. “If you plan to arrive near flight times, parking can be an issue,” Jones warned.
Local Tiktok users, including travelers Jaden, McKenna and Page, expressed disagreement over the trend.
“You’re taking a lot of risk,” McKenna said, noting that the anxiety that could lead to miss the flight outweighed the thrill of closing it.
When asked if they needed 2 hours, Jones recommended that they arrive at least 60 minutes before departure, even if they hadn’t checked their bags.
“It’s essential to give extra time, especially during the important times of the morning,” he advised.
As spring break approaches, travelers are urged to prioritize planning over social media trends for a smoother airport experience.
