Trump approves Ukraine the first export of US military equipment since assuming presidency – Report

Donald Trump has approved the first export of US military equipment to Ukraine since assuming a presidency, following his long-standing mineral trade signing between Washington and Kiev.

The Trump administration has informed the US Congress that it plans to export defense-related products to Ukraine through direct commercial sales (DCS) of over $50 million, Keefe Post said.

The notice issued Tuesday came one day before the mineral agreement was officially signed.

A source close to the Ukrainian government told The Times:

I think it’s important as the first step of goodwill from Trump after we did what he wanted us to do.

Here is a summary of the important events of the day:

Ukraine signed a contract that would share revenues with the US from future sales of minerals and rare earths, months after months of negotiations. The agreement “clearly demonstrates to Russia that the Trump administration is committed to a peace process centered around a long-term free, sovereign and prosperous Ukraine,” announced U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent.

Donald Trump said the mineral trade could give “a lot more” than Washington spent helping Ukraine. Speaking on the phone, the US President said:

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andri Sibikha said in a social media update he spoke about the agenda of EU foreign policy director Kaja Karas and Ukraine Eu Eu and the mineral trade he signed last night. He said the agreement “marks a significant milestone in the Ukraine-US strategic partnership aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s economy and security.”

Ukrainian and Russian civil society leaders are calling for the unconditional release of thousands of Ukrainian civilians detained by Russian prisoners, and they are calling for world leaders to become central parts of the peace agreement. Olexandra Matvichkuk, director of the Kiev-based Civil Liberties Centre, who won the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize, said most debate over the end of the conflict led by Donald Trump’s administration focuses solely on territory and potential security assurances.

Ukrainian emergency services reported that a Russian drone attack killed two people and injured 15 people in an attack in Black Seaport City, Odesa. The AP reported local authorities saying the barrage of hell had hit apartment buildings, private property, supermarkets and schools.

In response to Odesa’s attack, Ukrainian President Volodymia Zelenki repeated his call to put more pressure on Russia to stop the ongoing attacks on Ukraine. Written on Telegram, he states: “At least, our proposal was to refrain from hitting civilian infrastructure and to establish permanent silence in the air, seas and land. Russia responded with new artillery fire and new assaults,” he said.

Kiev has cautious optimism about the long-discussed terms of the US ukrane mineral trade that was signed Wednesday, but this appears to be an advantage that most people expected.

Many details have yet to be finalized, and are written into further technical agreements that have not yet been signed, suggesting that the long saga of the deal may not be completely over. However, Ukrainian analysts point out that despite Donald Trump’s repeated claims that Ukraine “has no cards” to play, Kiev apparently seemed to have been able to draw some major concessions.

“Ukraine held this line. Despite the great pressure, all of the demand from the other side has been removed. The final deal looks fair.”

Below is more details about the latest mineral trade that the White House attacked between the US and Ukraine.

The White House said it described the deal as “the first partnership for reconstruction of Ukraine and long-term economic success.”

This transaction establishes a fund that receives 50% of royalties, licensing fees and other similar payments from the Ukrainian Natural Resources Project

Natural Resources Projects include minerals, hydrocarbons and related infrastructure developments

If the US decides to acquire these resources for itself, it is given a “first choice between obtaining them or specifying the buyer of our choice.”

The funds will be invested in new Ukrainian projects that “produce long-term returns for both the US and Ukrainian people.”

The contract is controlled by a company that equally represents three Ukrainians and three American board members.

According to a White House read, “A state, company, or funding that funded or fed Russian war machinery is not permitted to benefit from the reconstruction of Ukraine, including participation in projects supported by fund resources.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed France because it attracted support for the Ukrainian peace deal, but European allies cited the US State Department and said they needed to assign actual resources and political will to support the war.

In a statement after Rubio’s phone call with Frenchman Jean Noel Barro on Thursday, the US State Department said:

“Secretary Rubio praised the French leaders for garnering support from Europe and Ukraine for sustainable trade, but made it clear that words were not enough.”

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday welcomed the mineral contract as a true fair agreement with the United States and the first results of his first meeting with US President Donald Trump.

Zelenskiy said the mineral trade paves the way for modernising the industry in Ukraine. Zelenskyy has been under pressure to shift US policies to support Russian accounts of the war in Ukraine and to show the consequences of Trump’s courtship, which frequently criticizes Ukrainian leaders.

Moscow on Thursday accused Kiev of attacking busy markets in Russia’s controlled southern Ukraine. The drone strike killed at least seven civilians and injured more than 20 people, but Kiev said the attack killed only military personnel.

Reuters could not verify the claims on either side.

Vladimir Sardo, the governor set up in the region’s Russia, said the drone had hit a market in the town of Oleshki, a public holiday, around 9:30am local time.

He and two social media users have released a video aimed at showing some of the incident. Reuters confirmed the location as Oleshiki, but could not independently verify when it was filmed.

One video shows the explosions are explosive in a group of low haired buildings. Another video shows at least two bodies lying on the ground beside the structure. We couldn’t tell them who they were.

Vladyslav Voloshyn, a spokesman for the Ukrainian military, said Kiev was targeting Russian troops in parts of the Moscow-controlled Kherson region, and only military personnel, not civilians, were killed.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has called on the international community to condemn its terrorist act.

The Ukrainian parliament is expected to ratify the U.S. ukraine mineral trade, which was signed within a week on Wednesday, a Trump administration official told reporters on Thursday.

They added that Ukraine’s deal could be a model for other international agreements going forward, Reuters reported.

The general partnership overseeing the transaction is resident in Delaware, they said.

White House spokesman Caroline Leavitt said the US ukrane mineral trade was “the first of this kind of economic partnership for reconstruction of Ukraine and long-term economic success.”

Ukrainian forces said Thursday they had launched an attack on Russian troops in the Carson region of southern Ukraine, saying the strike killed only individuals in the military, not civilians.

The governor, set up by Russians in the area, said on Thursday that at least seven people were killed and more than 20 were injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on a busy market in Oleshki town.
