Trump threatened China with even bigger tariffs
President Trump yesterday told China to either withdraw retaliatory tariffs against the US or face a 50% extra charge starting tomorrow. This threat comes as countries around the world were trying to appeal to the president to rewind sudden tariffs.
Additional tariffs will result in the gross taxes Trump has imposed on Chinese imports since he took office at 104%.
Asia: Bangladesh and Vietnam have asked Trump to delay the imposition of tariffs, but the Philippines has offered to reduce tariffs on US goods. South Korea and Japan said they would like to have talks with the Trump administration.
Europe: EU officials have adopted a two-part approach, offering to cut tariffs on American-made cars. Trump later said reporters weren’t enough, and is an industrial product, even though he prepares to retaliate with a wide range of import taxes. BLOC representatives are expected to vote for a list of products they plan to target at tariffs tomorrow.
Trump has announced talks with Iran
Trump yesterday said the US will hold talks with Iran on Saturday on suppressing its nuclear program. He warned that if the meeting fails to bring about a breakthrough, “Iran will be in great danger.”
In-person consultations at private locations will be the first meeting between the US and Iran since the end of the 2015 nuclear agreement. Trump did not specify who would negotiate, but said they would be at “higher levels.”
Speaking in an oval office after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said the new nuclear deal with Iran was “stronger” than the previous agreement.
Context: Trump withdrew from previous nuclear deals in 2018, despite Iran shipping 97% of its nuclear material abroad. Iran has since rebuilt its capabilities and today it produces bomb grade uranium.
Will the Black Sea Cerezage benefit Ukraine?
My colleague Constant Mehew joined the Ukrainian Navy last week on a Patrol mission for the Black Sea. There, the Russian army was repelled enough to return to a level close to beforehand.
They wanted to know how Odesa’s naval officers and business owners saw the Black Sea ceasefire, where Kiev and Moscow agreed to negotiate last month. Many people rejected this idea. Some expressed doubt.
“Nothing will change for me,” said one captain. “I’m fighting like usual.”
Russia: After the Ukraine invasion, approximately 800,000 Russians fled their country. A peace deal may not be enough to bring them home.
