Two-time State Diving Champion Maisey O’Donnell was one of three high school seniors killed in this week’s car accident… a tragedy that took place during the spring break holiday in Florida.
The incident happened on Highway 98 near Panama City on Monday night… when O’Donnell and the other three SUV crashed in a tractor trailer that was making a U-turn at the median.
The force of the collision sent the SUV to the median… and it finally stopped in the nearby forest.
Two Concord Carlisle high school students, driver Jimmy McIntosh and passenger Hannah Wasserman, were declared dead at the scene.
O’Donnell, 18, was taken to Bay Medical Center in dangerous conditions…but later died. The fourth student remains in a critical state.
The trailer driver was not injured.
O’Donnell is Massachusetts’ two-time diving champion and has received several other awards, including MVP and all-state honors for the first team. She had planned to attend Williams University in the fall.
Boston area diving coach Joe Chirico called her one of the best in the country.
“That’s a tragedy,” Chilico said.
“The little ones respect her. The other divers respect her. It’s tragedy that someone at the top of their game is so short that they go to the best academic school, one of the best divers in the country.”
The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
