The 40-time service weekly aims to boost business, tourism and trade between Uganda and the UK, and will reestablish the direct link in nearly a decade.
Uganda Airlines has announced a major milestone in its expansion strategy starting May 18, 2025 with the launch of direct flights between Entebbe International Airport and London Gatwick.
This marks the first entry into the European market and restores the direct air link between Uganda and the UK nearly a decade later.
The new route is expected to strengthen Uganda’s connections with Europe and promote business, tourism and trade.
Speaking at the route announcement event, Ugandan Airlines CEO Jennifer Bamturaki emphasized the importance of expansion.
She noted that the launch has overcome challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, which delayed initial planning for the UK business following years of planning.
“This route marks the end of our founding phase and sets us on the course for long-term growth. It connects Uganda to important business and tourism markets since Western Europe,” Bamuturaki said.
Africa’s pearls are important tourist destinations, and the UK remains one of its top sauce markets. The new service is expected to increase the number of visitors while providing Ugandan exporters with faster, more efficient routes to ship faster, more efficient routes to the UK.
Industry data shows Uganda’s exports to the UK were valued at $22.6 million in 2024, with the airline’s cargo capacity set to promote further growth.

The flights run four times a week with carefully scheduled connections to Uganda Airlines’ expanding African network, including Nairobi, Lagos, Johannesburg, Kinshasa and Accra.
The airline is currently the largest operator from Entebbe, with 77 departures each week, with this new route increasing its number to 81.
Bamuturaki also recognized the roles of key partners, including the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority and the UK High Commissioner in ensuring regulatory approval.
“We are grateful for your assistance in securing foreign carrier permits for this route,” she said.
Passengers can now book tickets via Uganda Airlines’ website, mobile app and authorized travel agents.
With this expansion, Uganda Airlines is strengthening its position as a key player in regional and international aviation, working with Uganda Vision 2040 for economic development and connectivity.
