Rita is an 11-year-old Congolese refugee living in the refugee settlement of King Kyoka II in western Uganda. Tragically, she lost her parents shortly after starting school and now lives with her foster parents.
Despite her foster parents’ efforts, meeting the costs of Rita’s basic needs is a challenge and puts her education at risk.
“I’m continuing school and dreaming of being a doctor.” – Rita, 11
When Rita was unable to attend school for a week, the NGO introduced Uganda to the Spotlight Initiative. Working with UNHCR and senior female teachers, we identify and support vulnerable girls according to their needs.
Rita was supported by essential school supplies such as school bags, books, pens, soaps, shoes, petrolatum jelly and hygiene products. These materials allowed her to return to primary school and continue her studies.
“I’m continuing school and dreaming of being a doctor,” Rita said.
Girls in refugee settlements contribute to early marriage, child labour and violence, including high dropout rates due to inadequate educational support. However, Rita’s story highlights how targeted interventions overcome these barriers.
In 2024, the Spotlight Initiative supported 530 girls in Kyoto II’s refugee settlement with school materials.
Following support from the Spotlight Initiative, Rita not only returned to school, but her academic achievements have improved dramatically. In the 152 student class, Rita is currently ranked 16th in her class.
This transformation underscores the importance of sustainable advocacy and support for girls’ education in reconciliation.
In 2024, the Spotlight Initiative supported 530 girls in the Kyaka II refugee settlement by providing school materials to provide school materials. These resources have helped address key gaps, improve girls’ retention and create a supportive learning environment where girls can thrive.
Rita has moved from a vulnerable adolescence to an active member of the school’s anti-based violence club. Through her advocacy, she urges other young girls to return to school and pursue their dreams.
