Monrovia –

A high-level delegation from the West African Countries Economic Communities (ECOWAS) will arrive in Liberia on Sunday, March 23, 2025, to resume efforts to resolve the ongoing leadership conflict within the House of Representatives.

This marks the second intervention at a political impasse by ECOWAS following previous mediation attempts in 2024 that did not provide a solution.

The delegation is led by Professor Ibrahim Agbula Gambali, former governor of UN political affairs and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria. I have an ambu with him. Abdel Fatau Musa, Chairman of Ecowas’ Politics, Peace and Security, is Ebenezer Asydu, Head of Democracy and Excellent Governance for the Ecowas Committee, Representative Director of Ecowas’s Advocacy, Constant Gunacadia, Representative Director of McCrufa, and Executive Assistant Francis Asyckin’s Executive Assistant McCrufa.

The visit of the delegation will come at a crucial time as the Liberian Supreme Court will be hearing a request for information on the 26th March 2025 of J. Fonati Koffa’s dispute was filed. The hearing allows both sides of the conflict to present arguments and potentially affect the resolution of the political crisis.

During the visit, the ECOWAS team will engage key political and government figures and civil society groups to explore paths to resolve the deadlock.

The scheduled meetings of the delegation will include Foreign Minister Sarah Bethorrow Nyanti, President Joseph Nyma Boachey, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Supreme Court bench, President Pro Tempore and the Senators, and the rule of law.

Additionally, the delegation will meet with Representative Richard Coon and representatives of the majority Bullock, as well as former Presidents Ellen Johnson Sirleef and George Weir.

ECOWAS intervention follows months of legislative paralysis due to an ongoing leadership conflict. Previous mediation attempts have failed, but with the involvement of Liberian judiciary and ECOWAS’s new efforts, there is hope for a breakthrough.
