The West African Media Foundation has condemned the arrest and threats of Mauritania human rights activist Ahmed Olds Samba and is calling for his release.
Anti-slavery activist Ahmed Ordo Samba was summoned by the police anti-preservation area on January 22, 2025, and was taken from prison custody by the West Nouakkot area prosecutor’s office. The detention continues its harassment campaign in relation to key Facebook publications claiming systemic racism in the country.
On October 2, 2024, Nouakchott’s police anti-carriage force arrested an anti-slavery activist after claiming discriminatory recruitment and promotion in Mauritania’s public services in a Facebook publication. He also explained that President Mohamed Urd Cheikh El Gazuuani indulges in “racist and corrupt policies.”
The criticism was arrested the following day when he won a bag from a public service post as a financial inspector on October 1, 2024. He was detained for a month and released without legal proceedings.
Several human rights associations and organizations oppose the detention of Ahmed Urd Samba. His member Ngo Sos-Esclave states that Ahmed is “persecuted to defend his idea of defending citizenship.”
The West African Media Foundation (MFWA) is concerned about the arrest and imprisonment of Ahmed Or Samba, who is lit up the threat to Mauritania’s freedom of expression and human rights, and seeks his release.
